When to Use THAT in Relative Clause

WHEN TO USE THAT IN RELATIVE CLAUSE

We use that for people or things.
1. That is used to replace who, whom, which in defining relative clauses:

  • The doctor whom/ that I was hoping to see wasn't on duty.

2. After superlatives:

  • He was the most interesting person that I have ever met.

3. After only, the first, the second, the last,...

  •  It was the first time that I heard of it.

4. After noun phrase compose of person and object:

  •  She talked about the people and places that she had visited.

5. After indefinite pronouns, quantity pronouns: someone, something, anyone, anything, noone, nothing, all, some, any, little,...

  •  These books are all that my sister left me.

6.When that has a preposition, the preposition always comes at the end:

  • I didn't know the uncle that I inherited the money from.
  • We can't find the chainsaw that we cut all the wood up with.

 

NOTES:
1.We cannot use "that" in non-defining relative clauses.
2. We cannot use use "
that" after preposition.
